What We Do

Dennis Potter and Jeff

Yes, Dennis Potter and Jeff "Bear" Andrews are members!
Maybe you can meet them at the next fly bee?

The Grand River Fly Tyers is a dynamic club that has a lot to offer to the root novice as well as the seasoned enthusiast. The following is a small list of what we do on a regular basis.

- We have regular tying session where we tell lies and tie flys starting the 3rd week in Sept to the 3rd week in May.
See calendar.
All sessions are held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 6:30PM to 8:30PM.

Our meeting location is at:
Hillside Community Church,
1440 68th Street SE
Grand Rapids, Mi 49508.
(one block west of Kalamazoo Ave.)

At the first FFF International Fly Tying Competition held on April 30th 2006, the Grand River Fly Tyers captured 39 medals or 40% of the total awarded! Read more about it here.

Our members have also won awards from the Great Lakes Council of the FFF.

2002 GLC Presidents Award went to Wolf and Inga Schrey for their untiring efforts on behalf of the GLC. Their great dedication is truly appreciated by the GLC.

2008 Award for Excellence went to Wolf Schrey for Excellence for his leadership of the Grand River Fly Tyers. The GRFT is for many the “go to” club as far as new and progressive ideas are concerned.

2009 Award for Excellence went to Inga Schrey for her tireless dedication and work on behalf of the Grand River Fly Tyers, GLC, and the FFF.

- We offer novice, experienced and advanced fly tying classes.

- Casting and general flyfishing clinics are held as well. Would you like to learn how to Spey cast?

- We have several general get togethers such as picnics, fly bees, and an annual banquet.

- The Grand River FlyTyers have started a Youth Program for the local and surrounding areas teaching youngsters the art of tying and casting. Our youth program is a complete program that gives the youth the chance to fish with what they are tying and using the techniques that that they are learning in our program.

And so much more! For more information, contact Steve Ibershof.
